The Internet abounds with web sites and information about bargain airfares and package
deals. Money saving options include: consolidators, wholesalers, bucket shops, couriers, charters and special offers by major
airlines. However, in spite of many improved Web-based reservation systems, we still
recommend the services of a competent travel agent who will work to find the best prices
based on individual requirements.
Some points to consider when using the Internet to find bargain airfares:
- Except for major airlines and smaller US and European carriers, there are several
reliable international carriers that do not yet have an Internet presence.
- The bulk of the Internet deals cater to the US market. Some itineraries such as South
America to Europe or Europe to Asia/Australia, can be less expensive by routing the flight
through the US.
- Many airlines have Air Passes that can only be purchased outside the destination
countries. This is one of the best deals for travel within larger countries like Australia
(Qantas), or groups of countries such as the Caribbean
(BWIA) or Southeast Asia (Cathay Pacific). These are not all promoted on the Internet so
be sure to check with the airline or travel agent.
- If you do not live in the US or Europe, some US and European airlines now offer deals
from destination cities back to their main hub.
- Most of the last minute email deals offered by US airlines are only suitable for weekend
jaunts.
